About

Here at Material Moves, at the new location,
1st Floor, 32 St Nicholas Street , Scarborough,
I primarily offer classes teaching people how to make clothes. Along side these my shop sells dress fabrics, haberdashery, sewing machines, tools and equipment and all things for the dressmaking hobby. Please check with me for opening times. or contact me to make an appointment.
I try to source products that are organic, more ecological, and that my suppliers don't use plastic packaging.

Making our own clothes is THE sustainable approach to dressing. We all need to wear clothes, however we acquire them, but making them can revolutionise our attitude to our wardrobes. Its creative, we can make clothes that no one else has, that are unique to us, and reflect who we are, we can make clothes that actually fit properly, and by doing so, we value our clothes more, less ends up in landfill or clutters up our wardrobes hardly worn. The sewing skills we can acquire can also contribute to being able to alter and adapt our existing clothes and charity shop finds, giving us even more green benefits. There are so many more benefits, for example, we can improve our social, mental, and emotional wellbeing as well as improving our self esteem. When we go out into the world wearing our self made unique clothes, and someone compliments us, it can be so rewarding and gives us a sense of accomplishment,
because "I made it".
